Insight: Many decide to stay with their health insurance company more out of habit than out of fear of doing something wrong by switching. Once you have made the decision to change, here's how to proceed, all the dates and how to send a cancellation letter. Once the summer is over, many people choose to change companies and send a cancellation letter. This is the worst time to do it: insurance companies in fact have the highest level of administrative activity. The processing time is correspondingly long. In reality, it is possible to communicate your decision much earlier, although, obviously, the contract will remain valid until its legal expiry. However, anticipating is the best way to avoid slippage. What you should know about the decision to change health insurance: Basic insurance (LAMAL): The notice period is between one month and the end of the year, which means that the cancellation letter must reach the health insurance company by last working day of November. Attention, the deadline is not the moment in which it was sent, but the moment in which the health insurance company physically takes possession of it. If you are insured in the traditional model and with the minimum ordinary deductible required by law of CHF 300, cancellation is also possible at the end of June. However, the notice period is three months, so the cancellation letter must reach the health insurance company by the last working day of March. You must also continue to maintain the minimum deductible. Cost contributions already paid (deductible and annual deductible) will be taken into consideration by the new company. Supplementary insurance (LCA): for most health insurance companies, the contract duration for supplementary supplementary insurance is multi-year, with terms that can be three or five years. However, there are companies that sign up supplements for a duration of one year. However, the notice period is three months. This means: a cancellation must be received by the health insurance company by 30 September of the expiry year (last working day of the month). If you do not cancel the insurance in time, the contract is automatically extended within the specified period. However, if there is a premium increase for the following year, you can cancel in accordance with the terms signed How to proceed: You can rely on us for your paperwork, such as sending a cancellation. If you want to do it yourself, the simplest choice is to attach a copy of the previous insurance policy to the new health insurance company, asking to cancel the old policy on your behalf. It is also possible to send a cancellation letter yourself, paying attention to the correct address. Confirmation of admission from the new company is not necessary to be insured with the Lamal base: federal law does not allow refusals. You are covered by the new health insurance company only if you have informed your old insurance company of the change, and above all if you have regularly paid the policies. Otherwise the old company may not grant passage. In any case, one thing is clear: you will never be insured with two different companies at the same time and you will never pay double premiums. Federal law does not allow this. If you cancel your basic insurance, but want to leave your supplementary insurance with your old company, you need to state this very clearly. It is advisable to include in the cancellation letter: «This cancellation applies only to Lamal basic insurance. My supplementary insurance remains with your health insurance.» In many cases, when the deadlines of the supplementary insurances allow it, it is possible to change the basic insurance and the LCA insurance at the same time. However, it is advisable to move in time: before canceling a complementary one, the best thing to do is to find out first whether the new company is willing to accept the new customer. In fact, companies are not obliged to sign additional LCA and the risk is that of canceling an additional one and then having to do without it...
